General presentation

The Ésaat (the College of Art,Design and Textiles) is the successor to the National School of Industrial Art founded in 1889 and the grammar school opened in 1973 for applied art and textile studies. The acronym ESAAT, created in 1981 and made official in 1989, marks this continuity of instruction combining creativity with professionalism and imagination with a sense of reality. ESAAT’s history is one of a school of applied artistic creation whose close relations with the professional world are founded on the economic realities and artistic needs of today.

Nowadays, situated right in the centre of Roubaix, at the heart of a communal transport system, Ésaat has 250 secondary school and 550 college students who are taught by 80 teachers and 15 professional instructors. In September 1991, Ésaat invested in a new building designed by Gilles Neveu whose resolutely modern architecture conforms to the educational constraints and provides highly suitable surroundings.

Ésaat provides secondary education as a preparation for the diplomas in Science and Industrial Technology with the options of Applied Art and for the Graphic Arts diploma in Model-making and Design Technology.

Ésaat also provides higher education as a preparation for the diplomas of Higher Textile Design, Interior Design, Visual Communication, Communication Space, Product Design , for a diploma in Artistic Crafts with the option of Cinema of Animation, for a higher diploma in Applied Arts with the option of Textile Design and for a higher diploma in Applied Arts with the option of Visual Communication.

Ésaat is also open to the professional world through a partnership with companies in the various sectors, work experience placements in France and abroad for all students on completion of their first year of studies, pieces produced to familiarise students with the realities of work and continuous training courses provided for companies.

Ésaat is highly active in the cultural life of the region, receiving artists, organising exhibitions and participating, with its students and teachers, in local cultural activities.
